CHAPTER 25

Patrick was dozing on top of the couch when he became aware of a strange sight. Four cats were waving at him from the fire escape, and seemed to have some urgent desire to speak with him. He shook his head and was determined to simply ignore them until they went away—like a bad dream—but that wasn’t what his new human had in mind.

Georgia felt that she couldn’t just let those kitties sit there all by themselves, and so she just had to go and open the window so they could enter the apartment. Big mistake!

“Go away,” he said as they all trooped around him.

“There’s something I would like to ask you, Mr. Hedgehog,” said a white Persian. She seemed to be the one in charge, even though formerly he had assumed that the large orange one was the boss. Clearly, that wasn’t the case.

“I said, go away,” he repeated.

“Oh, aren’t you the cats belonging to Odelia Kingsley?” asked Georgia as she placed a saucer of milk on the floor.

“Thanks, but we don’t drink milk,” said the red one.

This was too much for Patrick. He directed a scathing look at the big cat. “That’s extremely rude of you!” he said. “When a person offers you a saucer of milk, you accept that saucer of milk and you say thank you!”

“But I don’t drink milk,” said the big cat, whose name, if he remembered correctly, was Max. “It gives me diarrhea.”

“Even so. You should never refuse a gift. It’s not done.”

“I like milk,” said the Persian. “But Odelia has told me never to drink milk offered by a stranger, or food for that matter. It could be poisoned.”

The hedgehog raised himself up to his full height, which wasn’t very high, and said, “Where are your manners! How dare you think my human would offer you poisoned milk?”

“No, but I’m not saying this milk is poisoned,” the Persian clarified. “Just that it could be poisoned, you see.”

“And I’m telling you that my human would never do such a thing. So either you will drink this milk right now, or you will leave the same way you just came.”

The cats all stared at the milk, and gulped. “I’ll drink it,” said the smallest of the foursome. “I’ll sacrifice myself for the team.”

“No, I’ll drink it,” said the big black one. “I’ve had milk before and it hasn’t killed me yet.” He approached the milk with visible reluctance. “It doesn’t smell bad,” he said after taking a sniff. He took a lick. “It doesn’t taste bad.”

“Brutus, don’t do it!” the Persian cried passionately, and actually swiped the saucer of milk away from the black cat, causing all of the milk to spill on the floor.

Georgia, who had witnessed this, seemed surprised. “Has the milk gone off? Oh, that’s too bad. I only bought it a couple of days ago. I’m sorry, kitties. I’ll give you some of Shelley’s kibble.”

The poodle came tripping into the room from the bedroom, where she liked to sleep on the bed.
